The Greater Los Angeles Area, often referred to as the Southland, is one of the largest and most diverse metropolitan regions in the United States. It encompasses five counties in Southern California: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura. This vast region is home to more than 18 million people and includes hundreds of cities, neighborhoods, and unincorporated communities that span coastal areas, mountains, deserts, and inland valleys.

It includes the City of Los Angeles with its many iconic districts such as Hollywood, Downtown LA, Westwood, and Koreatown. Other major cities in the county include Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, Long Beach, Glendale, Burbank, and Inglewood. Each of these areas has its own distinct character, cultural heritage, and economic significance.
To the south lies Orange County, known for its suburban landscape, beaches, and theme parks. Cities such as Anaheim, Irvine, Santa Ana, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach are part of this region, which balances business centers with residential communities and tourist attractions.
Inland, the counties of Riverside and San Bernardino form what is commonly known as the Inland Empire. These areas have grown rapidly in recent decades, with cities like Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, and Moreno Valley becoming important residential and commercial hubs. Though geographically distant from the coast, they are considered part of the Greater Los Angeles Area due to economic, transportation, and cultural connections.
To the northwest, Ventura County includes cities such as Oxnard, Ventura, Thousand Oaks, and Simi Valley. Known for its more relaxed pace and natural beauty, Ventura County still maintains close economic and commuter ties to the Los Angeles metropolitan core.
Interestingly, the Greater Los Angeles Area also reaches into more remote, desert regions such as Searles Valley in northeastern San Bernardino County. Though far from the urban coastline, Searles Valley and its unique geological formation, the Trona Pinnacles, are culturally and economically tied to the region. This dramatic desert landscape has served as a filming location for numerous Hollywood productions, including science fiction and action films, music videos, and commercials. Its inclusion in the broader metropolitan footprint reflects how the influence of Greater Los Angeles extends far beyond traditional urban boundaries.
The Greater Los Angeles Area is not only a population center but also a cultural, technological, and creative powerhouse. Its diversity is reflected in the wide range of communities that call it home, representing virtually every race, ethnicity, and language. From entertainment and aerospace to international trade and higher education, this sprawling region continues to be a driving force in both the California and national economy.
