This initiative, though seemingly absurd, suggests that California could become «New Denmark» and, in the process, allow the state’s residents to potentially become citizens of the European Union. For many, the idea of Denmark buying California might sound like a joke or a fantasy, but it’s an intriguing notion that has captivated the imaginations of nearly 200,000 Danish citizens who have pledged support for the plan.

Not only would Californians be able to bask in the sunshine of their new home, but they could also gain the benefits of EU citizenship, enjoying the perks of free movement across Europe and access to various EU programs and rights. The initiative, which already has close to 200,000 supporters, involves crowdfunding a vast amount of money—around $1 trillion—to make the purchase a reality. With each Dane expected to contribute 200,000 kroner, the goal is ambitious, though it remains unclear how this amount could realistically be raised or if Trump would ever consider such a deal. The tongue-in-cheek campaign even proposes sending Denmark’s best negotiators—perhaps Lego executives and figures from the hit TV series Borgen—to work out the details.
